MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Graceland's new $70 million hotel project is being called a game changer for Whitehaven.
They officially broke ground on the Guest House At Graceland Thursday afternoon.
Memphis city officials picked up shovels alongside Priscilla Presley.
City officials are hoping this is the first of many new projects for Whitehaven.
Elvis fans are a constant. The hotel is sure to be new must see for them. The city is counting on other businesseswanting to get in on the action.
"This is the largest hotel project in Memphis and Shelby county in over 30 years," Kevin Kane of the MemphisConvention and Visitors Bureau said.
Thousands make the trip to Memphis every year. Elvis Week is Graceland's busiest and the choice time for The Guest House At Graceland's groundbreaking.
"It changes the landscape. The face. The dynamics. We now can go and recruit some businesses we've been really looking at and now we can say here's something we have in our hand come join us," Memphis City Councilman Harold Collins said.
Collins lives in Whitehaven and represents it. Over the past year Local 24 has covered efforts to improve the neighborhood. $43 MILLION is being poured into beautifying Elvis Presley Boulevard. Repaving it, adding wider sidewalks, and new landscaping.
That project is expected to be complete by early 2016. The Guest House is projected to open in the fall of 2015.
Collins said Elvis Presley Anterprises' $70 million hotel will stimulate further investments.
They keep trying to fix the outside when it's the inside that's broken. A renovated crime-ridden neighborhood will still be a crime-ridden neighborhood. Until you fix the crime & education, it won't matter what you rebuild. Families are broken and that problem is at the base of every inner city problem.
