NEW ORLEANS -- A critically ill person and others were taken from a ship in Belle Chasse and taken to West Jefferson hospital by an ambulance staffed with personnel in hazmat suits Wednesday afternoon, following a health scare aboard the Liberian-based cargo ship.
After being anchored overnight, the ship has left the Belle Chasse area is sailing up river to New Orleans.
Jefferson Parish John Young said federal health officials informed him that the patient was being treated for malaria, and it is not contagious.
