At the last meeting we were successful in getting the commission to equalize the tax rate for all of Shelby County and to reduce it by one cent. We were not successful in keeping the commission from allocating 6 million dollars(miraculously floating around in surplus funds heaven) though they haven't set this in stone. They will be voting to do this Monday.
12.
Resolution to amend the FY 2015 Operating Budget to appropriate an additional $6,000,000.00 to The Education Fund for purposes of Pre-Kindergarten Education. Sponsored by Chairman James M. Harvey, Sr. and Commissioner Steve Mulroy.
24.
Resolution requesting the Mayor to appoint a committee to develop a plan for Pre-Kindergarten education and to commit funding for Pre-Kindergarten education. Sponsored by Commissioner Steve Basar. (FAILED IN JULY 16, 2014 COMMITTEE MEETING)
Mayor Luttrell was for the major property tax increase last year when we supposedly didn't have enough money to pay for the budget. Now, in an election year, the mayor was all for a decrease, that's ONE WHOLE CENT and your welcome for that too. It's election season, that's obvious. The school system has suffered a lot of shocks in the last 2 years, why do we need to increase the stress on this system. This is an expansion of government during a struggling economy. Anyone want to guess who will pay for this government expansion next year when the commission has to raise taxes to pay for pre-k?
Please email/call your commissioners and let them know how you want them to vote. As a side note, how many of you attended pre-k? It is not what most people would call necessary in the education of our children. A link to contact them is here...http://www.shelbycountytn.gov/index.aspx?NID=1209 call 222-1000 to leave a message.
