MEMPHIS, TN -(WMC) - Beale Street shut down Friday night after a massive power outage downtown.
Police set up squad cars and other light sources to help penetrate the darkness.
Lights went out at 8:45 p.m., but around 2:00 a.m. MLGW tweeted that power had been restored.
The downtown area is on its own grid, and so the outage is not reflected on the MLGW outage map.
MLGW confirms they have a problem at a substation, which powers the area; they say an outage at this substation put the area in the dark.
The utility company heard that Memphis Police Department was responding to fires around manhole covers at Second Street and Butler Avenue and Second and GE Patterson.
Officials say there was no gas leak, and MLGW crews are trying to clear the air underground so they can get down there and investigate the problem.
