MEMPHIS, TN (localmemphis.com) - Lee Harris is pretty new in the world of politics, but the first term city councilman has already written his name in the history books.
"We're excited, we're thrilled," said Harris.
He beat Ophelia Ford in her state senate re-election bid Thursday night. Beating a member of the Ford family in their re-election bids is a big deal.
"Now they've lost races. Harold Ford Jr. lost a Senate race, for example. They've never lost a re-election race until last night and Ophelia made it impossible to elect her," said political reporter Jackson Baker.
Ophelia Ford had the worst attendance record of any Tennessee state Senator.
At times, she spent more of your money on travel expenses from Memphis to Nashville than any other state Senator.
But she kept getting re-elected--until last night.
"I think what we saw last night is, it's not just that Memphis is changing, Memphis has changed. And it happened in the blink of an eye," said Harris.
