I was not so surprised to see Governor Haslam travelling through Western Tennessee the other day on what I would call the campaign trail and neither was I shocked to see him giving away his tokens as he moved through the neighborhood.
Some History books provide accounts of what life was like for peasants in the Middle Ages in England. For example, one says: “The lords had great influence over the lives of the peasants; they would determine whether a peasant would earn a living or not. Sometimes, during major festivals the lords would throw feasts and offer their peasant servants food, clothing, drinks and firewood. ” http://www.thefinertimes.com/Middle-Ages/peasant-life-in-the-middle-ages.html
Gee, does that sound like our modern day equivalent in the form of politicians handing out grant money and other favors to certain counties and towns?
“BROWNSVILLE — Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam announced a $715,844 grant to the city of Brownsville at a press conference Wednesday. ”
The transportation alternative grant will fund Phase II of the Downtown Enhancements Project, located along Main Street from South Bradford Avenue to North Park Avenue. It will include the replacement of 1,800 feet of sidewalk, relocation of utilities and new landscaping.”http://www.jacksonsun.com/story/news/local/2014/07/23/transportation-grant/13057739/
And in Savannah, TN, the Governor stopped by to hand out 3 grants:
“July 24– Gov. Bill Haslam stopped by Savannah this afternoon to visit the new Tennessee Street Park and announce three grants totaling $585,517 will fund three area projects for the city and Hardin County.” http://www.courieranywhere.com/
Does anyone ever really ask where this money comes from?
