http://bit.ly/WuDa6nCORDOVA, TN -- Bobcats are one of the rare animals you can't find at the Memphis Zoo, but residents in Cordova say they've been spotted in their backyards.
One woman snapped several closeup photos of the animal Sunday morning near Walnut Grove and Sanga.
We're told it's not uncommon for them to be found here. They range from Canada down to Mexico and several have been seen in the Mid-South over the years.
Mary Wachenschwanz's friend saw the animal in her backyard.
"It was just coming out of the woods and shrubberies behind her house."
She took a few photos and Wachenschwanz sent out an alert to the neighborhood.
"It's scary when you live so close because I have a dog and I'm scared to death to leave him out."
Gail Karr is the assistant curator of mammals at the Memphis Zoo. She says bobcats live in the woods, and that it's very rare to spot one.
"They're pretty reclusive and very, very shy. They don't want to mess with you. They pretty much want to hang out and do their thing because it's their home too," Karr says.
