Ask anyone what is the problem with politics today and you’ll get several answers, greed, too much money, ignorance, but that would only be symptoms of the disease; apathy. That feeling of hopelessness is self-fulfilling prophecy. “My vote doesn’t matter so I won’t vote,” or “The system’s corrupt” both ensure the status quo. In Tennessee last Thursday of the 4.7 million voices available to speak less than one million were heard from. It’s like the episode from The Simpsons where everyone says they’ll vote for Bart Simpson for class president, but when the votes are counted only the class nerd, his opponent, and the nerd’s friend bothered voting.
On Thursday, roughly 8 percent decided your options in November for our next US Senator. Let that sink in, eight percent chose Lamar Alexander and now we could be stuck with him for another six years, or until he retires and we get no choice in his replacement. Now, imagine we had those additional 3 million voices. What would they say? What might they have done?
